helping hand for the improvement of well-being
What is
Spirulina?
Arthrospira platensis, or spirulina, is a microscopic cyanobacterium,
or blue-green algae. Spirulina
derives its name from the Latin word ¡§spiral¡¨,
due to the coil like shape of the algae.
Spirulina has a long history of safe use as a nutrient dense food
and nutritional supplement. Dried spirulina contains all of the
essential amino acids and consists of 60% to 70% protein, 15% to
25% carbohydrate and 18% essential fatty acids. It contains a relatively
high amount of various vitamins and minerals, along with the pigments
carotenes, including betacarotene, chlorophyll and phycocyanin,
and the essential fatty acid gamma-linolenic acid (GLA).
The
history of use of Spirulina
Spirulina was used as a nutrient dense food source by the Aztec
people of Mexico over 500 years ago before Spanish colonization.
The indigenous people of the African Kanembu tribe also consumed
spirulina as a food, and still collect and eat spirulina from the
alkaline lakes in the desert.
Today spirulina is ecologically cultivated in many special farms
under tightly controlled conditions, allowing the growth of a high
quality spirulina without the growth of other, toxic blue-green
algae. It is a popular complementary medicine that is sold in many
countries around the world including Japan, the USA and of course
Australia.
